“Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man,” 受到這句話的啓發，導演Paul Almond於1964拍了一部影片“Seven Up!”，記錄了當時英國七歲的孩子們，對於將來人生與夢想的期望。
Michael Apted當年負責的是“Seven Up!”研究彙整相關作業，對於這個題材非常熱衷，於七年後，決定繼續追蹤片中各個主角的生活，拍成續集。而往後每隔七年，又陸續追蹤。目前“Up”系列記錄片已累積七部，最新的一部是2005年的“49 Up”，預計2012年推出下集。
